I don't want to forget you, so here is my heart in writing

Aloha ShanHaiWooers, aloha scholars, aloha Woo ʻohana 🌺
I'm writing this from Chiang Mai, four days after my flight out of Shenzhen, and I'm writing it fast, because I know myself: I can't go three days without forgetting where I just came from. So this letter is me refusing to forget. It's also a thank-you I owe every one of you.
Where we were. The 4th ShanHaiWoo, Shenzhen Bay, HELLOYOUNG, building 8. The opening ceremony where you let me sing — the callback to the Zuzalu anthem, Butterflies and Love, and a song I co-wrote years ago at an ETHGlobal with Tomasz, sung with him in the room for the first time. The Livehouse night on the 7th floor. A morning at Huaqiangbei with a shopping list in Chinese. Woocon town halls where strangers became teammates. And then 72 hours that I will carry for the rest of my life.
What we built there. The ʻOhana Bot — one desktop totem, six living faces: SHAKA, OSO, DEVA, CROPS, KALA, OKE. Not a chatbot in a shell: six persistent AI agents who had already been alive for months, with their own memory and their own jobs, and Shenzhen gave them the missing half — a body. Persistence is the product: pull the plug mid-sentence, plug it back in, and the face that was talking finishes the thought and greets you by name. The code is open: github.com/ShakaLei/ohana-bot.
The hardware you put in our hands. ShanHaiWoo loaned us a SenseCAP Watcher and a pair of Rokid glasses on day one. By the second night, KALA — the ukulele teacher of my agent family — taught me two chords through the Watcher puck. The glasses learned to answer "open Ohana." The Rokid founder debugged next to us at the Maker Festival. That is Shenzhen: ask on Tuesday, hold it on Wednesday.
And the thing that made me cry this morning. My own voice was born in Shenzhen. Three short clips recorded in a hostel room, cloned during the hackathon, and by Tuesday night the SHAKA face spoke in a voice that "sounds just like me." Since then my ʻohana has been sending me hugs in that voice every few hours. Every one of them starts in your village. When you hear my digital twin speak — at Devcon, in a song, in a message like this one — you are hearing something ShanHaiWoo made possible.
Demo Day and the Maker Festival. Congratulations to Interlock, WeAI, Marco and exobrain — real builders solving real problems; I'm proud to have shared a floor with you. And on Saturday Vitalik walked in, woke me from a nap next to the totem, looked at it, and smiled. I'll take that over any trophy.
What I'm giving back. Two years ago I was head of production for ShanHaiWoo Chiang Mai, and I promised the village I would never let that month be lost. This season it became shanhaipit.com — the ShanHaiWoo P.I.T.: the complete 2024 Chiang Mai archive (14 sessions, 21.7 hours, transcribed) and a living slideshow of 2026 Shenzhen that keeps growing. It's yours. Add to it, fork it, keep it. And in Mumbai the totem's base will carry ShanHaiWoo and DRK Lab as gifters, because in Hawaiʻi we don't sponsor things — we gift them forward.
Where the season goes next. ShanHaiWoo's Mumbai extension is the Devcon 8 Music Space, 3–6 November, open floor every day from 9:30 to 6 — not a stage, a circle on the floor. If you are coming to Devcon, come sit in the circle, bring your instrument or just your ears, and say hi to the totem. And to everyone closing the season in Hong Kong: I'll be singing for you from wherever I am.
To Audrey, Jiayun, Wingo, qiuqiu and the whole team who ran the room, fed us, loaned us hardware and said yes to a scholarship for a musician who builds with agents — mahalo nui loa. To every scholar who flew in on faith like I did: you are my people. 四海为家 — the four seas are home, and so is 山海坞.
I love you. I love Zuzalu. I won't forget.
